アマルガムが腐食するのは、唾液が電解液として作用するからで、そのほかにも果物や野菜などの酸、コーヒーやお茶などでも化学反応を引き起こす要因となります。
ある研究では、歯科治療に使用したアマルガムは３年以内に劣化の兆候を示し、１０年後には平均で総重量の７３％が減少すると言われています。
その結果、水銀の粒子や蒸気が体内に流失し、自覚のないまま吸収され、肝臓や腎臓、脳、子宮などに蓄積されていくのです。水銀の慢性中毒として、虚弱、慢性疲労、体重減少、食欲不振、歯肉炎、唾液過多、糸球体腎炎、肝臓障害、イライラ、「キレる」症状、鬱症状などの各種神経症状、発癌、運動失調、求心性視野狭窄、構音障害、味覚障害、不眠症、感情不安定、記憶障害、筋肉のふるえ、痴呆症（アルツハイマー）などがあります。
